Twin Trifecta Could Reach $140,000

Horse racing fans from throughout the state will try to share in one of the largest wagering pools in Washington state history tonight at Playfair Race Course.

Tonight’s twin trifecta, a proposition in which bettors try to select the first three finishers in two consecutive races, has a carryover of $93,910. Including the nightly share of the twin trifecta betting, the pool should increase to as much as $140,000, according to the track’s marketing director, Hugh Mellon.

The twin trifecta races will be the sixth and seventh on a 10-race card. Post time will be 6 p.m.

In the twin trifecta, fans buy $2 tickets on the first half. Those with winning tickets divide half of the night’s net twin trifecta pool and exchange their tickets for their second-half selections. When there are no second-half winners, that half of the pool carries over to the next racing day.

Playfair has not had a winner for the last seven racing days. The current carryover is the third largest since the Spokane track introduced the twin trifecta in 1993. The record of $129,091 was established Sept. 4, 1994, when eight winners each collected $16,136.

The record payoff of $89,012.40 went to a single winning ticketholder on Oct. 10, 1993.
