Thirty-nine killings in three areas near Johannesburg and Pretoria may be the work of two men acting together, a U.S. expert on serial killings said Friday.
Robert Ressler, a retired Federal Bureau of Investigation criminologist, told a news conference there were links between the killings in the Cleveland and Boksburg areas of Johannesburg and the Atteridgeville black township outside Pretoria.
Most of the victims were black women, and some were sexually assaulted. They were either strangled or shot to death.
The serial killings have prompted questions on whether they might be politically motivated to cause instability.
