Ferris Tops University In Shootout

Thanks to a gritty goalkeeper, the Ferris Saxons kept a lock on second place in the Greater Spokane League girls soccer race Friday with a 2-1 shootout win over the University Titans.

Ferris goalie Ida Hardin saved the first, second and fourth shots of the five-shot shootout and Saxon Sharma Shields scored the winner as Ferris’ record moved to eight wins, one overtime win, zero overtime losses and one loss for 23 points. The Titans dropped to 5-0-1-3 with 16 points.

In other matches, Mead stopped Shadle Park 1-0, Lewis and Clark beat North Central 2-1 and Central Valley blasted Rogers 4-0.

Ferris scored first on Mariah McConnaughey’s free kick from just outside the 18-yard line at the 36-minute mark.

University then tied the match 3 minutes later as Alisha Crowe took a loose ball in front of the net and punched it in from 6 yards out.

At Shadle Park, the first-place Panthers (9-0-0-0, 27) battled a determined Highlanders (1-0-1-7, 4) team, who had six starters out with the flu, to post the victory.

Stacy Clinesmith scored the Panthers’ (9-0-0-0, 27) only goal at the 15:20 mark.

At North Central, the Tigers (4-1-0-4, 13) scored two late second-half goals to snuff the Indians’ (0-2-0-7, 4) bid for their first outright win.

At Rogers, Katie Carpenter scored twice, both on assists from Shea Donaldson, as the Bears (4-0-1-4, 13) blanked the Pirates (0-0-1-7, 1).
