Compiled From Wire Services

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman got approval from the NHL Board of Governors for league players to participate in the 1998 Olympics at Japan. In order for NHL players to participate in the Olympics, the league will shut down the 1997-98 season for 16 days. Bettman said the 82-game schedule would remain in place and the time would be made up with shorter training camps.

An arbitrator ruled that the New Jersey Devils have a valid contract with Claude Lemieux, meaning the veteran right winger can’t get out of his contract.
