Reardan Edges No. 1 Ritzville

Chris Derrick Staff Writer

Good thing for Reardan that its huddle resembles a democracy more than a monarchy.

Reardan coach Dan Graham ignored his gut feeling Friday after the Indians pulled within 7-6 of Ritzville on a touchdown with 3 minutes, 18 seconds left in the third quarter.

Graham wanted to kick the extra point and tie the game. The players said no - and won.

Instead, Travis Titchenal bulled over one defender for a two-point conversion run and third-ranked Reardan held on for an 8-7 win over top-ranked Ritzville.

Reardan (3-0, 4-0) tied Davenport for first place in the Northeast B-11. Ritzville is 2-1, 3-1.

“(Graham) tells us to let him know what’s going to happen,” said Reardan receiver Robb Soliday, whose 16-yard TD reception from Nathan Graham set up the go-ahead conversion.

“They had the confidence to run what they wanted to run,” said Dan Graham. “I wanted the tie because I thought we could score again. What do I know?”

For one, Graham knows what to do after 24 minutes are in the book.

Reardan trailed 7-0 at halftime after attempting passes on 12 of its 25 plays. For their first series of the second half, the Indians ran seven consecutive times. On the eighth play, Matt Clouse got behind the defense for a 25-yard reception to the Broncos 25.

Five plays later, capping a 7-minute drive, Soliday ran a fade to the right corner and Graham lobbed a TD pass over two defenders.

Graham finished 11 of 17 for 110 yards, with one interception. He was 4 of 5 for 72 yards in the second half.

“We have to throw the football,” said proud papa Dan Graham. “And I thought we established some things on the line of scrimmage after halftime.”

The final quarter-plus became a battle for field position. Reardan, which held the Broncos to 37 yards after the break, had the upper hand. Reardan senior Frank Blacker had three quarterback sacks in the last 9 minutes to put a stamp on the win.

“It’s just Reardan pride,” said Blacker, who at 165 pounds is one of the heftiest Indians starters. “We’ve been going against (size disadvantages) for as long as I can remember.”

Ritzville forced two fumbles and intercepted a pass in the first quarter. Kyle Bauer’s fumble recovery at the Broncos 28 led to a two-play TD drive: Jason Warriner’s 37-yard run and Andy Hilzer’s 35-yard streak down the left sidelines.

Reardan had a 13-play drive in the second quarter that Bob Russel stifled with a QB sack.
