Capital Celebrating Cherry Blossoms

Compiled From Wire Services

The capital’s residents and tourists welcomed budding cherry trees and other signs of spring Sunday as the National Cherry Blossom Festival began.

The two-week festival includes sports events, craft fairs and cultural activities in appreciation of the 3,000 cherry trees given to the city in 1912 by the mayor of Tokyo as a symbol of friendship.
