Nathan Jeffries Receives Deca Education Award

Nathan Jeffries, a senior at Mead High School, received the 1995 National Marketing Education Honor Award from DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) for his achievements in academics, leadership, DECA activities and service to community and school.

Jeffries is the son of Mike and Karolyn Jeffries, Spokane.

Cheri Catt, vice president and manager of Sterling Savings Private Banking Department, was elected board president of Big Brothers & Sisters of Spokane County.

Other newly elected officers are Jim Reed, president-elect; Paul Buller, Jack Lucas, Karen Riba and John Tonani, vice presidents; Stan Parrish, treasurer; and Kay Cobb, secretary. Immediate pastpresident is Greg Smith.

Candace Ballmer, Kathy Habel, Brian Hearden, Kaye Hendren, George Renner, Paul Smith and Jim Williams are all newly elected board members.

John Stoltz, John Kerrick and Cobb, all board members, received 20-year awards.

Those earning 15-year awards were Mark Casey and Tom Quigley; 10-year awards were presented to Marilyn Thordarson and Stan Parrish.

Kristi Jo Mingo, Spokane, received a bachelor of science degree from Portland State University.

Joyce Hawkins, a junior at Eastern Washington University majoring in piano performance, has received a $500 music scholarship from Mu Phi Epsilon, an international professional music fraternity.

Hawkins, married and the mother of six children, accompanies two EWU choirs and 11 vocal and instrumental students. She will stage her junior recital during spring quarter.

Marine Capt. William A. Vargo, son of William W. Vargo, Spokane, recently received the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal while serving as air traffic control commander with Marine Air Control Squadron Seven, Santa Ana, Calif. He joined the Marine Corps in 1991.
