Nic Student Badly Beaten By Youths

From Staff And Wire Reports

A North Idaho College student remained hospitalized Monday after being badly beaten by a group of juveniles Friday night.

Shane Tirrell, 19, was listed in fair condition Monday in the orthopedics and neurology wing of Kootenai Medical Center in Coeur d’Alene.

Shortly before midnight, passers-by found Tirrell, of Coeur d’Alene, lying unconscious in the street at the intersection of Fourth Street and Garden Avenue.

Witnesses told police they saw four or five juveniles kicking Tirrell in the head and upper body. When police arrived, Tirrell’s face was swollen and purple, both eyes were swollen shut, and there were lacerations above his eyebrows.

Tirrell was taken to the intensive care unit at Kootenai Medical Center, where doctors attached him to a respirator. An emergency room doctor told police that Tirrell had a blood-alcohol content of .30, or three times what the law considers drunk.

Police have no suspects in the case.
