Duran, Crying Camacho Scuffle

Compiled From Wire Services

Hector Camacho, in tears and his hand bloodied, scuffled with Roberto Duran when the two aging former champions tangled during a New York news conference for their June 22 bout.

Duran looked untouched and unmoved by the scuffle on the dais, but not Camacho. The 33-year-old Puerto Rican was left shaken, tears visible and blood on the back of his left hand from a cut when he hit one of Duran’s rings.

“I used to respect him,” Camacho said. “Now I come over here and he makes a big show by disrespecting me. He’s fat and lazy, a fat hamburger-eating slob.”

The altercation escalated quickly from the usual exchange of prefight histrionics. Duran suddenly stood and challenged Camacho after hearing him say he was going to win the 12-round bout at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, N.J.

The undercard to the Camacho-Duran bout will feature the comeback of Buster Douglas, the former heavyweight champ and the only man to beat Mike Tyson. Douglas will fight Tony La Rosa.

In Providence, R.I., South Africa’s Mbulelo Botile used a right to the chin to knock out U.S. Boxing Association champion Ancee Gedeon 35 seconds into the 11th round to retain his IBF bantamweight title.

Also on the card, Tony Martin won the vacant USBA welterweight title with a 10th-round knockout of previously unbeaten Kip “Top Kat” Diggs.
