Fire Department Sets Recruiting Seminars

From Staff And Wire Reports

The city of Spokane is hosting three seminars about upcoming firefighter recruitments.

To keep the recruitment list fresh, the Fire Department tests every two years for potential employees, said Gita Hatcher of the city’s Affirmative Action Department.

Nearly 1,000 people showed up for testing two years ago.

“It’s a job that pays very well but requires a minimal amount of education,” Hatcher said, adding that a first-year firefighter earns about $29,000.

A new recruit can choose a variety of specialties, from fire prevention specialist to emergency medical technician.

The department isn’t increasing staffing this year, but new employees frequently are needed as replacements.

The seminars will include information about applications, testing, physical agility requirements and interviews.

The first seminar takes place Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Fire Training Academy, 3808 E. Nora. The second seminar, also at the academy, will be held April 13 from 9 a.m. to noon.

A third seminar takes place April 18 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the senior center of the East Central Community Center, 500 S. Stone.
