Braves 15, Giants 2

Atlanta

Fred McGriff set a career high with six RBIs Wednesday, and Atlanta showed that its hitting might be as good as its vaunted pitching by routing San Francisco.

The Braves scored 10 or more runs in six games last season, but have done it in both games against the Giants, winning the season opener 10-8. They scored in 11 straight innings, including the last four on Monday.

Javier Lopez hit a three-run homer and Ryan Klesko homered for the second game in a row, giving the Braves seven homers in two games.

Astros 5, Dodgers 2

Houston

Mike Hampton outpitched 1995 rookie of the year Hideo Nomo, and Derek Bell drove in two runs as Houston defeated Los Angeles.

Nomo issued five walks over the first four innings and left in the fifth after consecutive doubles by Jeff Bagwell and Bell and a single to Sean Berry produced two runs.

Cardinals 5, Mets 3

New York

Royce Clayton’s two-out single in the seventh scored winning pitcher Todd Stottlemyre with an unearned run that allowed St. Louis to beat New York.

Stottlemyre, making his N.L. debut after eight seasons in the A.L., allowed five hits in 7-2/3 innings, including a three-run homer by ex-St. Louis Cardinal Bernard Gilkey that tied the game in the sixth.

Dennis Eckersley pitched the last 1-1/3 innings for his first save in the N.L. and the 324th of his career.

Padres 7, Cubs 5

Chicago

Ken Caminiti broke open the game with a three-run homer, and finished with four RBIs as San Diego rebounded from a tough opening-day loss to beat Chicago.

Tony Gwynn had his 27th career four-hit game for the Padres.

Phillies 3, Rockies 1

Philadelphia

Rookie Mike Grace took a shutout into the ninth before Philadelphia hung on to defeat Colorado.

Grace left after Ellis Burks homered to open the final inning. Ricky Bottalico recorded the last three outs to earn a save.

Expos 8, Reds 4

Cincinnati

Mark Grudzielanek homered in a five-run eighth - his career-high fourth hit - as Montreal rallied to beat Cincinnati.
