Event For Kids Planned At The Japanese Garden

It’s not too early to register for Children’s Day at the Japanese Garden. The event, which is really for families but geared toward kids, will be May 4, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Manito Park Japanese Garden.

There will be storytelling, music, origami, a sand garden and art. It’s sponsored by the Friends of Manito. While registration isn’t required, it’s encouraged so there are enough supplies for everyone. Call 456-8038.

Roses, roses, roses

So many gardeners were interested in the Flower Carpet roses when they were introduced last August that demand exceeded the supply almost immediately. The roses are again available at more than 7,000 retailers across the country. To locate the one nearest you, call (800) 580-5930.

Gardening anyway

The Yard and Garden Lecture Series sponsored by the Spokane County/WSU Cooperative Extension continues Thursday with “Gardening In Spite of It All.” The workshop focuses on gardening skills for those with physical limitations. It’s $5 at the door, and the program runs from 7 to 9 p.m. at the extension office, 222 N. Havana. Arrive early to secure a seat.

The North Idaho Section of the American Institute of Architects has announced winners of the People’s Choice Awards. Voting was conducted in March, and about 300 people participated.

The first- and second-place winners:

Commercial category: Spokesman-Review Building (Architects West), Coeur d’Alene Realty (Anderson Architecture).

Commercial Miscellaneous category: Lake City High School (Architects West), Duncan’s Garden Center (Kristina Clark Architect).

Residential category: Spokane River residence (Troxell & Associates), Thompson residence (Architects West).

Residental Remodel category: Yarwood residence (Anderson Architecture), Hayden Lake residence (Miller-Stauffer Architects).
