Ray McGinnis Mead

At his request, no service will be held for Ray Charles McGinnis, 81. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North is in charge of arrangements.

A 60-year resident of Spokane, Mr. McGinnis died Wednesday.

He was born in Green Bluff and graduated from Mead High School in 1932.

He worked in the Oregon shipyards before serving in the Navy during World War II. He owned the Conoco station at 17th and Ray for six years before retiring in 1982. He also worked as a bus and truck driver, service manager and car salesman in Spokane. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Evelyn; one daughter, Susan Brickner of Spokane; one son, Patrick McGinnis of Gallup, N.M.; one sister, Hazel Hiler of Portland; three granddaughters and three grandsons.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Hutton Settlement.

Wilma Zuhl Northport, Wash.

Service for Wilma A. Zuhl, 90, is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. today at Danekas Funeral Chapel, Colville, Wash. Cremation will follow. Danekas Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Zuhl, who was born in Trail, British Columbia, died Wednesday.

She grew up in the Onion Creek area north of Colville.

She married William Zuhl in 1941.

Mrs. Zuhl was a graduate of Colville High School and from Eastern Washington State College in education. She retired to Woodland, Wash., after teaching for 32 years. She returned to Northport in 1994 to be with her family.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the American Legion Auxiliary of Northport and the Retired Teachers Association.

Her husband preceded her in death. She is survived by one sister, Alma Thomas of Tacoma; one brother, Michael Butorac of Northport; two stepgranddaughters and one stepgrandson.

Memorials may be made to Northport Dollars For Scholars, Columbia River Christian Academy or the Northport Cemetery Fence Fund.

Herbert Goertz Cheney

Vigil service for Herbert J. Goertz, 77, will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. Funeral Mass is scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Spokane Memorial Gardens. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-Cheney is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Goertz, who was born in Marion, S.D., died Wednesday.

He married Florence Kunkel in 1945 and moved to Cheney in 1947 after serving in the 96th Infantry during World War II.

Mr. Goertz retired in 1980 after nearly 30 years as a rural mail carrier in Cheney. He also worked for OK Tire Shop and the Grange Supply and as a mechanic for Radcliff Ford.

He was a member of the St. Rose of Lima Parish, past commander of the American Legion Post 72, past president of the Spokane County Rural Mail Carriers Association, past president of the Cheney Jaycees, and a life member of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 6.

He is survived by his wife; one daughter, Cheryl Tuck of Great Falls, Mont.; two sons, Bob Goertz and Gerald Goertz, both of Spokane; one sister, Clara Paulson of Huron, S.D.; and three granddaughters.

Nellie ‘Grams’ Hughes Spokane

Service for Nellie “Grams” Hughes, 90, will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Yates-Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in St. Maries.

Mrs. Hughes, who was born in Nebraska, died Wednesday.

She graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in Spokane. She formed her own band and performed throughout the region.

Mrs. Hughes later attended Kinman Business College and Drezden Modeling School.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Edward. Survivors include two sons, Edward of Montana and Curtis of Spokane; one sister, Bernadine Crawford of Coeur d’Alene; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Jeremiah James Taraba Coeur d’Alene

Graveside service for Jeremiah James Taraba, 17, will be held today at Forest Cemetery Riverview Section. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Taraba, who was born in Coeur d’Alene, died Tuesday.

He moved to Salt Lake City as a small child and returned to Coeur d’Alene in 1988.

He attended Lakes Middle School, Coeur d’Alene High School and Project Coeur d’Alene.

He recently was taking a welding class from North Idaho College through Project Coeur d’Alene.

Mr. Taraba recently received a Good Citizen’s Award from the Coeur d’Alene mayor as a reward for helping a woman with a broken hip.

Survivors include his mother, Karleen Sadler of Coeur d’Alene; his father, George Taraba of Arizona; one brother, Christopher Sadler of Coeur d’Alene; his grandparents, William and Marjorie Molyneaux of Coeur d’Alene, and Carol Taraba of Arizona; his great-grandfather, Carl Schrader of Seattle; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Ada Steg Minneapolis, Minn.

Memorial graveside service for Ada Lillian Steg, 86, will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Pinecrest Memorial Park in Sandpoint. Coffelt Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Steg, who was born in Montana, died Aug. 14, 1995. She had lived in Bonner County for many years and was married to former sheriff Alsiet Steg. She sold honey locally and moved to Minneapolis in 1994.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, Lavon Mitton and Alsiet Steg. Survivors include three daughters, Donna Hellendrung of Minnesota, and Lila Allen and Patricia Lang, both of Sandpoint; 17 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Margaret Dawson Espanola

Service for Margaret E. Dawson, 79, is scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday at Heritage Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Spokane Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Mrs. Dawson, who died Wednesday in Spokane, was born in McCammon, Idaho. She lived in Espanola for 15 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert in 1974.

Mrs. Dawson, a homemaker, was a former member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary in Kamiah, Idaho, and the Harmon Community Center in Airway Heights.

She is survived by one son, Danny “Butch” Huddleston, Lewiston; two daughters, Diane Erickson of Espanola and Nancy Martin of Airway Heights; one sister, Avys Marshal of Clarkston, Wash.; 17 grandchildren, 48 greatgrandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Iva Hole Spokane

Memorial Service for Iva Mae Hole, 83, is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday at Riplinger Funeral Home. Mrs. Hole, a 60-year Spokane resident, died Thursday..

She was born in Seattle.

She worked as a ward secretary at Sacred Heart Medical Center for many years.

She is survived by two daughters, Judy Holcomb and Dolores Gumenberg, both of Spokane; one son, Thomas Hole of Anacortes, Wash.; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Lillie Day Wallace

Private family service for Lillian Day, 76, will be held at a later date. Shoshone Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Day, a lifelong Silver Valley resident, died Tuesday. She was born in Wallace and graduated from Mullan (Idaho) High School.

She was a mother and homemaker. Survivors include her husband of 39 years, Travis; one son, Royel Parrish of Osburn, Idaho; one daughter, Wilma Wilson of Missouri; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
