Man Killed When Firetruck Overturns

From Staff And Wire Reports

A firetruck overturned on a rural Grant County road Monday night, killing the driver, 19-year-old Jon C. Boster.

Boster was headed to a fire at a trailer home about eight miles east of Moses Lake.

Another firefighter riding in the truck, Cullen B. Fowler, 19, suffered broken ribs.

Boster had been a resident volunteer firefighter for Grant County Fire District 5 for only nine months.

Some of his friends at the fire district were part of the rescue crew that responded to the accident, said Dale Bjork, an assistant fire chief.

“They’re all taking it pretty hard,” he said.

Those firefighters and other emergency workers received counseling Tuesday to help them cope with the tragedy.

Boster “always had a smile on his face,” Bjork said. “He was trying to figure out what he wanted to do with his life.”

Boster was driving a 3,000-gallon 1982 Kenworth water tanker when he lost control on a curve and veered off the right side of the road at 9:53 p.m.

A man and woman battled the trailer fire with a garden hose before firefighters arrived. The couple suffered second-degree burns, while the trailer sustained heavy damage, Bjork said.

Boster was one of the fire district’s 21 resident volunteers.

“It’s been difficult,” Bjork said. “We’re a small community. We all know each other.”
