Time Of Change Among Coaches In North Idaho

The list of high school coaching openings continues to grow in North Idaho.

Priest River boys basketball coach Kelly Reed plans to resign today after two seasons.

Because of a number of frustrations, Reed, one of the top young coaches around, decided his second season would be his last before the year began.

“I had great kids in Priest River,” Reed said. “They really gave me everything they had. Beyond that, I have no comment.”

Reed, who hopes to land another head coaching job some day, has expressed interest in the junior varsity job at Lake City. Timberwolves assistant Bill Pratt resigned following the season.

“That’s a job I’m extremely interested in,” Reed said. “It’d be great to be in a quality program. I’d learn a lot from (coach Jim Winger). He runs a high quality program.”

Winger is also interested in Reed.

“It’s great that somebody of his caliber would be interested in our program,” Winger said. “I’ve worked camps with him and he’s a very good coach.”

Other coaching jobs

Following his team’s quick exit from the state football playoffs last fall, St. Maries coach Curt Carr was contemplating retirement.

As it turns out, Carr is happy that his thought of resigning was exactly that, just a thought. He plans to return next fall.

Another coach who wrestled with the same decision was longtime Wallace basketball coach Dick Lilienkamp. But like Carr, Lilienkamp will return.

Longtime Mullan football coach John Drager is still standing by his plan to remain one more year as head football and boys basketball coach and then retire - at least from coaching.

He’ll spend one final year as a teacher and athletic director before taking permanent vacation.

Drager is searching for two head coaches, however. Shane Pooler resigned after one season as volleyball coach and plans to assist Drager in football.

School officials are replacing girls basketball coach Sherry Leitz.

“If you hear of any good young coaches, send them our way.”

That’s what Clark Fork principal Lewis Speelmon said Tuesday after accepting the resignation of longtime volleyball coach Sandy Ross. Her resignation pushes Clark Fork’s coaching vacancies to two.

Bird Nietmann recently resigned as head boys basketball coach.

Kootenai is looking for a head boys basketball coach. Russ Baker resigned after one season.

CdA beats Moscow 2-0

Freshman Kyle Chambers scored two goals, both on assists from freshman Andy Vredenburg, and senior goalkeeper David Scammell posted his third straight shutout as Coeur d’Alene beat Moscow 2-0 in North Idaho League soccer in CdA.

Scammell has allowed just one goal in his last four games.
