Clarinetist Performs With Symphony At Nic

Sharon Kam, winner of the 1992 Munich International Clarinet Competition, will perform as soloist with the Spokane Symphony when the orchestra plays at North Idaho College’s Boswell Hall in Coeur d’Alene Thursday night.

This concert will be repeated April 19 at the Spokane Opera House.

Kam will play Aaron Copland’s Clarinet Concerto and Gioacchino Rossini’s Introduction, Theme and Variations for Clarinet and Small Orchestra. The symphony, conducted by music director Fabio Mechetti, will perform Heitor Villa Lobos’ exotic tone poem “Dawn in a Tropical Forest” and Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2.

Kam was born in Israel, where her playing received early recognition. At 12, she won the first of her seven American-Israel Cultural Foundation Scholarships, and at 16 she made her solo debut with the Israel Philharmonic under the baton of Zubin Mehta. She has presented solo recitals throughout North American, Europe and Japan and played with such orchestras as the Chicago Symphony, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and the Tokyo Philharmonic. Kam studied clarinet with Charles Neidich at the Juilliard School and is now a resident of New York.
