Retired Justice To Speak In Spokane

Retired Supreme Court Justice Byron White will be the featured speaker May 10 at a U.S. District Court legal conference in Spokane.

As part of the day’s events, justices from the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals will hear arguments in six cases. A three-judge appeals panel will use the historic U.S. District Court courtroom in the U.S. Post Office in downtown Spokane.

It will be the first time the appeals court has sat in Spokane, said U.S. District Court Judge Frem Nielsen, who is organizing the day’s events.

White served on the Supreme Court from 1961 until his retirement in 1993.

Since then, he has been a visiting federal appeals court judge.

He will speak at the Federal District Conference and annual meeting of the Federal Bar Association for the Eastern District of Washington.

The gathering is scheduled for 1:30 to 5 p.m. at Cavanaugh’s Inn at the Park.

The event is co-sponsored by the Bankruptcy Bar Association, the Spokane County Bar Association and Gonzaga Law School. , DataTimes
