Stanley To Coach Cal Women

Compiled From Wire Services

Marianne Stanley was hired to turn around the struggling women’s basketball program at California.

Stanley, 41, coached Old Dominion to three national titles in the 1970s and 1980s and was a co-head coach of the Stanford team that reached the NCAA tournament Final Four this season. She has a 380-149 record in 17 years.

Stanley may be best known for being fired by USC after demanding pay equal to that of men’s coach George Raveling, and then filing an $8 million sex discrimination lawsuit against the school.

Cal athletic director John Kasser said Stanley agreed to a four-year pact with the same base salary as men’s coach Todd Bozeman - $110,000 a year.

Marsha Sharp, who directed Texas Tech to the 1993 national championship, signed a five-year, $1 million contract with the Lubbock school.
