Everywhere You Look, Sports And More Sports

Ah, the wild and wacky springtime, when more things are happening in high school sports than can possibly be kept track of.

But we’ll try.

Central Valley’s Whitney Schmaljohn established herself as this year’s Greater Spokane League sprint star with three sterling times, including a 12.2 100 that edged University standout Adrienne Wilson in a virtual deadheat.

Despite that, the Titan’s 39-15 field events point advantage carried them to an 86-55 victory. It was prelude to an April 24 title showdown (both boys and girls) with Mead and Ferris.

U-Hi’s boys also were impressive during an 87-1/2-57-1/2 win over the Bears. And despite the cold, both meets produced state-quality marks in at least 12 of 17 girls events and in 7 boys events.

Included were 800 and 1,600 times by CV’s Sandra White, Wilson’s long and triple jumps, Titan Syd Perno’s 39-6-1/2 shot put that beat Mary Caruso’s 38-1.

In the boys meet Cody Hirschi had a U-Hi school record-tying 14-foot pole vault, a height equalled by CV’s Ryon Triplett. Jason Wilson threw the discus 154-9 and Titan teammate Jeff Hollenbach put the shot 55-11-1/2.

University’s baseball team lost by a run to league leader Gonzaga Prep, but kept the GSL title race a five-team affair by knocking off Mead 8-4. The Titan win improved them to 4-2, same record as Mead which was coming off a victory over previously unbeaten Shadle Park.

Either offense was optimal or pitching and defense minimal, but the result was profitable for West Valley which outscored league co-leader East Valley (6-2) 16-11, despite the Knights’ 13 hits. Walks and errors gave WV its second win in the last three games. The Eagles (5-4) host Colville Tuesday in a game with playoff implications.

Unbeaten West Valley is at once-beaten East Valley on Tuesday in a pivotal softball game.

The Eagles have already swept Colville in a doubleheader leaving the Knights their most logical obstacle to a repeat title.

University continues to struggle against Mead. The two GSL title favorites clashed Thursday and the Panthers pulled out a 4-3 decision, scoring all their runs coming in the second inning.

East Valley’s girls tennis team won its fourth straight by nudging previously unbeaten Clarkston 4-3. On Friday the team was at West Valley against the once-beaten Eagles.

University’s girls team began the GSL season with two victories.

Not much was resolved after all in West Valley’s golf debut. The Eagles tied with Cheney, a team coach Tom Struthers named as a championship co-favorite.
