Food Bank Open Longer To Meet Needs

From Staff Reports

With requests for food assistance up more than 25 percent this year, the Spokane Valley Food Bank has expanded its hours of operation and is appealing for more donations to help the needy.

The food bank served 5,055 people during the first three months of this year, up from 3,984 during the same period last year, said Barbara Bennett, food bank manager.

In order to accommodate additional people, the food bank now is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Wednesday. In the past, it was open just three hours a week.

Bennett said the food bank has a particular need for flour, butter and powdered milk - commodities that formerly were provided to food banks by the federal government from surplus stock. Because these items typically are not readily available through food drives, food banks now buy them to give to clients.

The Valley Food Bank operates out of the Spokane Valley Center for Sharing, 11922 E. First. Donations can be dropped off weekdays between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. For more information about the food bank’s needs, call 928-7769.

Broadway resurfacing begins

Resurfacing work is scheduled to begin Monday on Broadway Avenue just west of the Interstate 90 Broadway interchange.

Nearby truck stops and truck repair facilities draw heavy truck traffic to the area west of the Broadway freeway overpass bridge. That truck traffic has caused extensive road surface wear, including severe rutting, said Al Gilson, spokesman for the Washington state Department of Transportation.

The $814,000 project will replace the existing asphalt pavement with a 10-inch thick concrete surface designed to withstand heavy truck traffic, Gilson said.

The work on Broadway Avenue and the westbound freeway ramps is expected to be completed by the end of May.

Motorists should expect delays and congestion on Broadway as the project progresses. Traffic on I-90 will not be disrupted by the project, Gilson said.
