Giants’ Home Opener Results In 4-1 Victory

Mark Leiter continually worked out of trouble while allowing one run in six innings as the San Francisco Giants celebrated their home opener with a 4-1 win Friday over the Chicago Cubs.

The attendance on a sunny, chilly afternoon was 45,589. It’s the smallest crowd for a Giants home opener since 1982, if the strike-delayed opener last year is not counted.

Marlins 3, Dodgers 1 Los Angeles

John Burkett pitched nohit ball for six innings and wound up with a two-hitter, leading Florida over Los Angeles.

Burkett (1-1) pitched his first shutout since Aug. 11, 1993, against Cincinnati.

Cardinals 6, Phillies 1 St. Louis

Ray Lankford homered twice and St. Louis moved two games better than .500 for the first time in two seasons.

Tom Urbani (1-0) allowed one run and three hits in 5-1/3 innings as St. Louis won its third straight and increased its record to 6-4. Urbani retired 11 straight before Kevin Sefcik’s hit leading off the sixth.

Expos 13, Pirates 3 Pittsburgh

Al Martin and Jacob Brumfield dropped fly balls as three Pirate errors led to a six-run fourth, and Montreal went on to beat Pittsburgh.

Moises Alou was 3 for 5 with four RBIs and Kirk Rueter (1-1) pitched one-hit ball for six innings as the surprising Expos, the majors’ lowest-paid team, won their seventh in 10 games.

Astros 10, Reds 8 (10) Cincinnati

Derek Bell tripled home a pair of runs with two outs in the 10th and continued home on a throwing error, giving Houston a win over Cincinnati.

Braves 5, Padres 3 San Diego

Rookie Jason Schmidt won his second straight start, and Atlanta broke out of an offensive slump to beat San Diego.

Rockies 6, Mets 5 Denver

Larry Walker and Andres Galarraga homered on consecutive pitches during a three-run sixth that powered Colorado to a win over New York.

Clearing the bases

New York pitcher Bill Pulsipher will undergo season-ending surgery on his left elbow Wednesday to repair a torn ligament. Pulsipher, 22, hurt himself in spring training. He received two opinions on the injuries, and both doctors recommended surgery. .. Philadelphia outfielder Jim Eisenreich has played 184 consecutive games without an error. .. St. Louis’ Dennis Eckersley appeared in his 906th game, tying Cy Young for eight place on the career list for games pitched list. .. Raul Mondesi of Los Angeles homered into the second deck just inside the left-field pole. He became the fifth player in Dodger Stadium history to hit into the loge level.
