1 Background Check Enough For Substitutes

From Staff And Wire Reports

Substitute teachers don’t need to get separate criminal checks for every school district in which they teach, Schools Superintendent Anne Fox says.

Fox has been on a tour of the state discussing new laws passed by the Legislature. One requires criminal background checks for school employees who have been with the district five or fewer years.

Fox said a common concern brought up by school officials has been substitute teachers, who often teach in more than one district.

She said substitute teachers will be required to have only one background check, and that documentation will be sent to each district in which the sub teaches.

School staff with five or fewer years of service will have to pay the $40 cost. Districts can ask school staff with more than five years of service to undergo the same criminal history check, but the district will have to pay for it.
