Carol Speltz Honored With Principal Award

Carol Speltz, principal of St. Mary’s School in the Valley, is one of 12 educators nationwide to receive a Distinguished Principal Award from the National Catholic Educational Association.

Speltz has also been recognized for “superb educational leadership” by Gonzaga University with its Distinguished Alumni Merit Award and the Terrance Cardinal Cooke Medal for service to the church in the military. She has worked in Catholic schools for 13 years.

The principals will receive their awards this month in Philadelphia.

Joy Peng, Spokane, was named to the Honor Roll at Western Wyoming Community College in Rock Springs, Wyo., for its fall quarter.

Robert Heydet, Deer Park, was named to the Dean’s List for the fall quarter at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Thirteen Spokane residents were named to the Dean’s List for the fall semester at the University of Portland. The students and their areas of study are:

College of arts and sciences: Jeffrey Bolka, Sean Brady, Tobin Carlson, Casey Collins, Laura Fredenburg, Alise Frye, Jamie Miller, Elizabeth Riherd and Kristen Weber.

School of education: Nicole Thorn; the Multnomah School of Engineering: Mike Walter; school of nursing: Katie Brattebo; and the school of business administration: Anna Bozo.

Douglas Todd Jefvert, Spokane, recently earned a bachelor of science degree in business from Indiana University at Bloomington.

Heather Jennings, daughter of Marilyn Jennings, Coeur d’Alene, and Everett Jennings, Spokane, was named to the Dean’s List for the fall semester at Simmons College in Boston. Jennings is a senior economics major.

Mark Thompson, Pullman, was recently named to Who’s Who Among Students In American Universities and Colleges. Thompson is a graduate environmental engineering student at Montana Tech.

Dave Jewett, Spokane, played the trumpet for the University of Northern Iowa Jazz Band One when it was awarded Outstanding Band at the 29th annual Elmhurst College Jazz Festival held in Chicago.

Several Inland Northwest students studying through the Extended Degree Program at Washington State University, were named to the President’s Honor Roll:

Adriana Bausz,Chewelah, Wash.; Gaylynn Collins, Gran A. Ansaldo Jr., Christy L. Packer and Aileen A. Taylor, Colville, Wash; and Diana L. Riordan, Spokane.
