Coeur D’Alene Girls Track Team Defeats Pf

In a dual meet at Coeur d’Alene on Wednesday, CdA’s girls team defeated Post Falls 82-56 while PF’s boys team beat CdA 92-54.

For the Vikings and Trojans, Brenda Nipp and Jennifer Swanstrom shared first-place honors in the 100 meters with times of 12.84 seconds.

Nipp won the 200 in 27.81.

Kari Newby of CdA won the 800 in 2:46.32. She added a win in the 1,600 in 6:22.56.

In the long and triple jump competitions, Post Falls’ Shannon Siverson won with leaps of 17 feet, 4-1/2 inches and 32-1, respectively.

In the boys events, the Vikings’ Luke Lee won the 300 low hurdles in 44:24 and doubled up in the high jump at 5-10. Lee also recorded a 11-2 pole vault.

Tigers break streaks

Lewis and Clark’s softball and baseball teams ended Greater Spokane League losing streaks in big ways.

LC’s softball team pulled out a thrilling 4-3 win over Rogers at Hart Field to snap a 19-game losing streak dating to March 31, 1995.

“This team has improved tremendously,” LC coach Dennis DeBill said. “With the exception of one player (a freshman), this is the same team that got 10-rounned 11 times last year.” The Tigers’ baseball team defeated Rogers 7-2. The baseball team had a nine-game losing streak dating to May 2, 1995.

Against the Pirates (2-6), in the bottome of the sixth with tow outs and the score tied at 3, LC (1-7) went to its bag of tricks.

At DeBill’s instructions, LC’s Brooke Fredrickson got caught in a planned rundown between first and second.

Rogers catcher Angie Vulcano instinctively threw the ball to second on Fredrickson’s mock steal attempt. But as the Pirates attempted to tag Fredrickson, Maria Arradondo scored from third for the winning run before the tag could be applied to Fredrickson to end the inning.

In the bottom of the seventh, however, Rogers reeled off three straight hits and threatened to break open the game.

But LC pitcher Olivia Smith recorded a strikeout and got two batters to ground out to end the game.

In other games GSL games Central Valley handed Mead its first loss of the year, 4-2; North Central beat Ferris 10-6 and University beat Shadle Park 11-1.

For the host Bears (5-3), after getting called up from the junior varsity this week, Jodi Stavenjord scattered five hits and held the Panthers (7-1) to two runs.

At NC (6-2), the Indians’ Kami McGowan got three hits and drove in three runs to help the team overcome nine errors against Ferris (2-6).

At U-Hi (7-1), the U-Hi’s Devon Bakken went 3 for 3, scored a run a drove in another against the Highlanders (1-7).

GSL baseball

U-Hi’s 8-4 win over Shadle and Ferris’ 7-0 win against NC moved the Titans and Saxons into a three-way tie for first with records of 6-2.

Also, CV defeated Mead 3-2.

At U-Hi, with the exception of giving up a three-run homer to the Highlanders’ (5-3) Eric Hayden, the Titans’ Nick Spunich made few mistakes as he gave up jsut four hits.

As for CV, the host Bears (4-4) got the game-winning runs against Mead (5-3) when Ben Miller hit a two-run homer in the fourth with the score knotted 1-1.

CV’s Erick Eigenhuis struck out seven and scattered five hits.

At NC (1-7), Ferris sophomore pitcher Eric Sandberg struck out 16, walked eight, allowed two hits and hit a three-run homer to lift the Saxons. He had finished with four hits< , DataTimes
