Lewis And Clark Teams End Long Losing Skids

Lewis and Clark’s softball and baseball teams ended Greater Spokane League losing streaks in big ways Wednesday.

LC’s softball team pulled out a thrilling 4-3 win over Rogers at Hart Field to snap a 19-game losing streak dating to March 31, 1995.

The Tigers’ baseball team defeated Rogers 7-2. The baseball team had a nine-game losing streak dating to May 2, 1995.

Softball

Against Rogers (2-6), LC (1-7) went to its bag of tricks in the bottom of the sixth inning with two outs and the score tied 3-3.

Following coaching orders, LC’s Brooke Fredrickson got caught in a planned rundown between first and second bases.

Rogers catcher Angie Vulcano instinctively threw the ball to second on Fredrickson’s mock steal attempt.

But as the Pirates attempted to tag Fredrickson, Maria Arradondo scored from third for the winning run before the tag could be applied to Fredrickson to end the inning.

In the top of the seventh, Rogers loaded the bases with no outs. LC’s defense tightened up and prevented Rogers from scoring.

In other games, Central Valley handed Mead its first loss of the year, 4-2; North Central beat Ferris 10-6 and University beat Shadle Park 11-1.

For host CV (5-3), Jodi Stavenjord, after getting called up from the junior varsity this week, scattered five hits and held the Panthers (7-1) to two runs.

At NC (6-2), Kami McGowan rapped three hits and drove in three runs to help the Indians overcome nine errors against Ferris (2-6).

At U-Hi (7-1), the Titans’ Devon Bakken went 3 for 3, scored a run a drove in another against the Highlanders (1-7).

In a Frontier League game, West Valley’s Carie Koker doubled and later scored on a fielder’s choice in the fifth as the Eagles (5-2) notched a 2-1 win over East Valley (5-2).

Baseball

At Rogers, LC’s Dealy Etter struck out six batters in the fifth and sixth with the bases loaded to preserve the win.

In other games, U-Hi’s 8-4 win over Shadle and Ferris’ 7-0 win against NC moved the Titans and Saxons into a three-way tie for first with records of 6-2. Also, CV defeated Mead 3-2.

At U-Hi, the Titans’ Nick Spunich allowed just four hits against the Highlanders (5-3).

At CV, the Bears (4-4) scored the game-winning runs against Mead (5-3) when Ben Miller hit a two-run homer in the fourth with the score knotted 1-1.

At NC (1-7), Ferris sophomore pitcher Eric Sandberg struck out 16, walked eight, allowed two hits and hit a three-run homer to lift the Saxons.

In the Frontier League, Clarkston (9-2) scored three runs in the top of the 10th to register a 10-7 win over Riverside (0-11).

At EV (7-4), Pat Stookey hit a two-run double in the top of the sixth for an 8-6 lead and the Knights scored a 10-8 win over Pullman (3-9).

At WV, Colville’s Brady Noble scored the game-winning run in the top of the seventh on a throwing error to lead the Indians (7-5) to a 7-6 win over WV (5-5).

GSL boys soccer

Mead’s J.J. Klaus scored three times to send the Panthers past visiting CV at Mead Junior High. Klaus got the scoring going early for Mead (6-0) with a goal at the 2:30 mark of the first half.

CV’s (1-6) Pat Flannigan tied it at 1-1 5 minutes later, but Mark Lupton gave the Panthers the lead for good at 25:20.

In other GSL matchups, LC beat U-Hi 1-0, Shadle blanked Rogers 9-0 and Gonzaga Prep beat Ferris 4-1.

In Shadle’s win, the Highlanders’ Ryan Vane matched the three goals of Mead’s Klaus. Shadle center midfielder Casey Laughary added two assists.
