San Diego Reserve Lifts Off On Colorado

Marc Newfield had four hits and four runs batted in - both career highs - to power the San Diego Padres past the Colorado Rockies 11-6 Wednesday in Denver.

Newfield, starting all three games of the series in left field in place of the injured Rickey Henderson, went 8 for 13 in the series with two homers and seven RBIs.

Astros 7, Mets 5 New York

Jeff Bagwell hit a three-run homer and an RBI double, and Derek Bell had a solo homer as Houston swept a two-game series from New York.

Phillies 9, Expos 3 Montreal

Lenny Dykstra went 4 for 5 with two triples and Terry Mulholland beat Montreal again.

Mulholland (2-1) allowed 10 hits in his first complete game to improve to 10-2 in his career against the Expos.

Dodgers 11, Giants 2 San Francisco

Delino DeShields led off the game with a homer, and doubled and singled in a seven-run fourth as Los Angeles routed San Francisco.

Dodgers starter Chan Ho Park, who struck out the side in the first and second, combined with three relievers to strike out 14.

Cubs 8, Reds 6 (10) Chicago

Sammy Sosa’s two-run homer - his second of the game - in the 10th gave Chicago a victory over Cincinnati.

Braves 4, Marlins 2 Atlanta

Chipper Jones doubled in two runs during a four-run eighth to send Greg Maddux and Atlanta to a win over Florida.

Cardinals 6, Pirates 1 St. Louis

Donovan Osborne retired 16 straight batters and Ray Lankford hit a 468-foot homer and doubled with the bases loaded, leading St. Louis over Pittsburgh.

Clearing the bases

Sammy Sosa’s two-homer game for Chicago was the 17th of his career and first since September. He has 135 career homers. … Florida placed reliever Alejandro Pena on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with a strained rotator cuff. … Delino DeShields of Los Angeles has led off a game with a homer six times.
