Craven Earns Pole

Compiled From Wire Services

Ricky Craven turned a lap of 93.079 mph as the fifth driver in the qualifying line, then had to wait nearly an hour until the last of 42 competitors fell short of his speed on Martinsville Speedway’s .526-mile oval to earn the pole for Sunday’s Goody’s Headache Powders 500 Winston Cup race.

The closest anyone could come was Kyle Petty, who was 34th in line and wound up second at 93.010. That lap was just 0.015-seconds slower than Craven’s.
