Crop Fund-Raising Walk To Be Held Sunday At Park

A walk for CROP - Christian Rural Overseas Program - will be held Sunday, April 28, in Riverfront Park.

Walkers are enlisting donors to contribute to the event, sponsored by the Spokane Council of Ecumenical Ministries, Church World Service and area churches.

Opening ceremonies are at 1 p.m., and the walk begins at 1:30.

There are two walking routes this year: a 10-kilometer loop that starts in Riverfront Park and follows the Centennial Trail to Greene Street and back; and a 2-kilometer loop that starts in Riverfront Park and circles back a little past Division Street.

CROP Walk is an annual fund-raising event to help furnish seeds to Third World countries, provide preventive family and community health care, offer services to refugees and displaced persons, furnish food and relief in disasters and famine, develop safe drinking water resources and teach self-help methods.

A $5 donation can buy a hoe for a Kampuchea farmer; $10 will provide vegetable seeds for 10 families in Chile or breakfast for 1,000 children in the slums of India; and the price of a video will cover the cost a pound of vegetable seeds in West Africa.

Last year’s walk raised $10,657. Since 1978, $263,993 has been raised, with $66,076 going to the Spokane Food Bank, Mid-City Concerns Meals on Wheels and the Spokane Valley Meals on Wheels.
