Youth Service Won’t Be Juvenile

Talk about a leap of faith. Millwood Community Presbyterian Church is turning over its Sunday service to a group of about 100 kids this weekend. The kids will do everything - music, the message, the whole bit.

But the adults organizing the event say there’s no reason to worry. The church does this every year - it’s their Youth Sunday.

“It takes a lot of work,” says Marilyn Gillam, director of spiritual formation at the church, located at 3223 N. Marguerite Road.

The throng of young people come from the church’s Sunday school classes as well as its Logos mid-week program.

First- through fourth-grade kids from Logos will perform a musical on why Noah chose a dove as the creature to send on a dry-land reconnaissance mission.

Sunday school students will lead the worship part of the program, which starts at 10 a.m. High school-aged kids will also perform a drama with a message, “The Judge.”

Third-graders who have completed the Bible Basics class will also receive Bibles with their names printed on them.

Gillam says she’s been involved with Youth Sunday for five years, and so far, so good. The kids have always done just fine. It’s that “faith as of a mustard seed” principle.

“It’s a monster to produce, but God’s grace is always there,” she says.

Daniel - in Levi’s

Remember that story about Daniel in the lion’s den?

Grade-schoolers from Berean Bible Church, 10910 E. Boone, are putting on a pulpit production of the Old Testament story Sunday at 6 p.m. The twist is, their version takes place during modern times. The king wears a tux.

“It’s a really funny musical,” says Carol Nelson, director of “Rescue In the Night.”

Characters have cool names, too. Take the king’s staff: Astofar (the astrologer), Crushafo (the king’s muscle) and Taxalot (remember April 15?).

The cast of 42 children have been practicing since September.

The musical is free.

Luncheon for missions

Veradale United Church of Christ, 611 N. Progress Road, will host its annual spring luncheon Thursday.

Tori Reiber, a Valley vocalist, will perform.

The event raises money for the church and various mission projects. The lunch starts at noon, and working folks in a hurry will be served first.

Tickets will be on sale for $6 at the door. Childcare is provided, and children can bring a sack lunch.
