Alpine Lakes Permits

Backpacking

The Wenatchee National Forest will begin selling this season’s backcountry permits for the Enchantment Lakes area on May 1.

A new toll-free hotline has been set up to take reservations for recreation in the Enchantments as well as the Eightmile, Caroline Lakes, Colchuck Lake, Stuart Lake, Mt. Cashmere and Windy Pass areas.

The permit system was enacted in 1987 to allow for the recovery of over-used areas, and to keep hikers from bringing dogs into the wilderness.

“Unlike the previous reservation system, the new procedure will allow callers to know right away whether their desired travel dates are available or not and, if necessary, make alternate arrangements during the phone call,” said Leavenworth Ranger Lisa Therrell.

As in past years, 25 percent of the daily permit quota will be reserved for day-of-use distribution and will be available through a daily lottery at the Leavenworth Ranger Station at 7:45 a.m. Permits are required for overnight use in the Enchantments from June 15 through Oct. 15.

The phone number for reservations is (800) 452-5687, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Reservation costs $6-7. The fee can be charged to bank cards. Checks are also accepted if reservations are made at least 21 days in advance.
