The Coeur d’Alene High School track teams made it a clean sweep Saturday at the Kellogg Invitational.

The Vikings girls, led by sophomore Brenda Nipp and freshman Eva Unruh, captured a team title with 126 points, just edging Kellogg (122). Bonners Ferry (113) finished third.

CdA’s Luke Lee took four events and Chris Cole was a double winner.

Cole didn’t come close to any personal records, but he did prevail in the 1,600 (4:47.3) and 3,200 (10:35.5).

Bonners Ferry kept pace with weight specialist Kevin Carey leading the way. Carey took the shot put (51-9) and discus (136-7).

Lakeland’s girls captured the team title at the Freeman Invitational held at Central Valley.

The Hawks tallied 94 points to top runner-up Newport (86).

How strong is the Mead program? Mead, defending Washington AAA state champion, sent its junior varsity boys team to Freeman and the junior Panthers were victorious. Mead posted 141 points to easily top Chewelah (122). Lakeland was fifth with 52.

Leading the Lakeland girls were Amber Jamison and Sarah DeBoer.

Mooberry meet

At the 33rd annual invitational, Mead’s boys and girls swept the team titles.

The best finish among Lake City participants was Bryce Knight, who took third in the 1,600 in a time of 4:27.5.

Baseball

Priest River has come miles in its first two years of fielding a team, but it still has a way to go before knocking off the defending Intermountain League champion. Lakeland swept the host Spartans 2-1 and 7-2 in a league doubleheader.

A pair of left-handers waged a duel in the opener as Lakeland’s Brett DeBoer, a senior, prevailed over Ricky Pettit, a young and talented sophomore.

DeBoer had 12 strikeouts and no walks.

A three-run fifth inning broke open the second game for Lakeland. Lakeland improved to 11-2 overall, 6-2 in league while Priest River slipped to 3-8 and 2-4.

Softball

Lakeland pitchers tossed a pair of one-hitters as the Hawks stopped Priest River in a five-inning Intermountain League games, 16-0, 10-0, at Rathdrum.

Freshman Tiffany Hall and Jenni Borg handcuffed the Spartans. Jeriann Huber had three RBIs in the second game and Jackie Foster and Monica Hall each drove in two runs. League-leading Lakeland goes to 7-1, 10-1 overall. Priest River dropped to 1-3, 2-4.

Postponed

Snow and rain - yes, snow - got the best of several prep events Saturday.

The Sandpoint-Lewiston baseball and softball doubleheaders, at Lewiston, were rained out.

Snow forced postponement of the St. Maries-Moscow baseball and softball doubleheaders at Moscow, and snow also canceled the Wallace at Lakeside baseball twinbill.

No makeup dates have been set.
