1,000 At Protest Of Timber Sale

From Staff And Wire Reports

About 1,000 people turned out Sunday in protest of a federal timber sale in the Mount Hood National Forest. The protest was peaceful and nobody was arrested for trespassing.

The U.S. Forest Service eased public access restrictions in the area prior to the protest.

Michael Carrigan of the group Witness Against Lawless Logging said protesters listened to speeches by American Indians and others and examined the timber sale area, which is about 35 miles east of Portland.

Oregon State Police said they took down a banner that was strung illegally over U.S. 26.

A federal judge ordered a temporary halt to logging at the timber sale last week and both sides were due back in court this week.
