Militants Threaten U.S., Israeli Targets

Mon., April 22, 1996

An Islamic militant group on Sunday threatened to attack Americans and Israelis around the world in retaliation for the bombing attacks on southern Lebanon.

The threat by The Vanguards of Conquest was made in a statement sent to a Western news agency in Cairo.

Also Sunday, a leader of the militant al-Gamaa al-Islamiya, or the Islamic Group, threatened to kidnap Americans to force the U.S. government to free Sheik Omar Abdel-Rahman.

Abdel-Rahman, the Islamic Group’s spiritual leader, was sentenced to life in prison earlier this year for a conspiracy to blow up the United Nations and other New York buildings.

The Vanguards of Conquest, believed to be an offshoot of the Jihad group blamed for the assassination of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat in 1981, also called for attacks against President Hosni Mubarak’s leadership.

Since 1992, Muslim rebels have waged a campaign of violence in Egypt in an effort to overthrow the secular government and replace it with strict Islamic rule.
