Site preparation began Tuesday on a 46,340-square-foot addition to Ironwood Square in Coeur d’Alene.
The large strip mall, anchored by Albertson’s and Pay Less Drugs, will extend from Lincoln Way on the west to Government Way on the east. The new wing will extend south on Government Way from the Ironwood corner.
Pads of about 5,000 square feet for non-connecting businesses will be at the corner of Government Way and Ironwood and between there and the new Schlotsky’s Deli.
The addition will include 10 to 12 small stores and a 24,500-square-foot “anchor” next to Pay Less. The anchor store probably will be Staples, an office supply and equipment superstore.
With headquarters in Framington, Mass., Staples has 360 stores in the United States and Canada. The average store employs about 30. Originating in 1986, the business combines retail stores and catalog delivery.
One of Staples’ major competitors is Office Depot, which has two stores in Spokane and plans to open another one in May in the Spokane Valley. Staples has been “flirting” in the area, a Spokane Realtor said.
Ironwood Square is owned by First Western Development of Edmonds, Wash. The new wing should be complete in September or October. Leasing agent is Shawn McMahon of Acuff Northwest Realty.
Another new Coeur d’Alene strip mall will be Sandalwood Business Center, a 9,000-square-foot, two-story project on the north side of Sherman Avenue between the newer Holiday Inn Express and Sundowner motels.
Replacing the torn-down Alpine Inn (earlier the Siesta Motel), the facility will have room for 13 professional office spaces from 500 to 700 square feet. Planned for a September completion, Sandalwood will have two entries on Sherman Avenue and two to its parking lot on Lakeside.
Architect is Mark Young, and builder is Style-Bilt Construction. Owner and leasing agent is Neil Dredge of National Associated Properties.
Another downtown Coeur d’Alene mall, the Plaza Shoppes of The Coeur d’Alene Resort, is showing off some changes.
The new tenants are J.D. Gray’s Designer Jewelry and Worthington’s Fine Antiques & Gifts. Meanwhile, Gallery by the Lake and Rare Rags changed locations within the plaza.
Gray’s will offer an open retail concept in the plaza center. Opening in 1,077 square feet during the first week of May, the store design will allow customers to meander through pedestal cases displaying small selections of jewelry.
Design is the emphasis, said owner Jon Gray, with each design unique and fitting the customers’ needs.
“You buy something you can really enjoy and wear all the time,” Gray said. “Coeur d’Alene is ready for this, but the community is small enough that I’ll be able to stand out right away.”
In the jewelry business for 22 years, Gray was raised in Spokane and has a store in Sacramento. He rediscovered Coeur d’Alene when he came north for a North Central High School reunion. His Coeur d’Alene store will employ five people.
Jewelry also will be a feature of Worthington’s Antiques, located on the plaza’s Sherman Avenue side. Other main items will include cut glass, art and decorative pieces, sterling silver and antique furniture from Europe, the U.S. East Coast and the Northwest.
A special attraction is a matching service for discontinued china, crystal and sterling. Also featured is the work of five artists who craft usable items from antiques.
Owner is Carol Worthington of Spokane. An antique dealer for 20 years, she has an outlet of 6,000 collectable dishes in Woodenville, Wash.
Other relative newcomers to the Plaza Shoppes are 7 Trumpets Bead Studio and Watches by Gosh.
Owner Jane Cooper offers “anything you’ll ever need for beading, including classes,” at 7 Trumpets. Cooper is a native of Salmon, Idaho.
The inventory at Watches by Gosh includes a large selection of watches, clocks and sunglasses. Owner is Don Bennett of Issaquah, Wash.
