Reporter Gets Facts, Uses Them To Steal Cars

A journalist turned to stealing cars for a living after conducting a jailhouse interview with the head of a car-theft ring who told all his trade secrets.

The Quito newspaper Hoy reported Tuesday that Edison Suasnavas, who worked for a capital newspaper that Hoy did not identify, interviewed the boss of a band of car thieves a year ago.

The imprisoned crook told the reporter all the tricks of his trade. Hoy reported that Suasnavas left the newspaper business and dedicated himself to stealing cars “with the ambition of amassing a fortune in no time.”

Suasnavas’ new career was cut short this week when he was nabbed in a police raid.
