One Look At This Stuff, You’ll Never Eat A Snickers Bar Again

Heather Hemmingmore’s Nut Bar bar is mottled green and white, tendrils of fungus waving in the water like a sick man o’war.

One jar over, a butter toffee - her favorite - floats in sickly yellow water. The Snickers is a spongy mess.

“This is what it looks like in your stomach,” said Hemmingmore, a Brentwood Elementary fifth-grader. “The nut bar is the grossest. It’s got the most colors of mold.”

The daughter of a “health food nut” who only gets the bad-for-you stuff when candy bar hawkers come to the door, it’s easy for her to say.

But her school science fair experiment hit a little closer to home for students in a Spokane Community College nutrition class - and a reporter - who heard her presentation.

“This is pretty disgusting to think about,” said one student, sneering at a blue M&M.

Hemmingmore has soaked a smorgasbord of dime store delicacies in water for three weeks, recording the deterioration. According to her research, candy often sits undigested in the bowels for weeks, rotting.

“I guess health food can be pretty good for you,” said Hemmingmore.
