British Brass Band Ends With ‘Festival’

William Berry

The Spokane British Brass Band closes out its first season with “Music for a Festival” at The Met next Thursday.

The band sports a matching set of cornets, euphoniums and all manner of brasses in the traditional British band style.

In addition to some English and Norwegian marches, the band will perform Franz von Suppe’s “Beautiful Golathea” overture and the powerful “Procession of the Nobles” from Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s opera “Mlada.”

Director Michael Warner will play a trumpet feature made famous by Rafael Mendez, “The Virgin of Macarena.”

Other soloists for the concert are Mark Tietjen, performing Mendelssohn’s “Spinning Song” on the marimba, and tubists Jerry Olson and David Johnstone in a work titled “Eine Kleine Oompah Musick.”
