Florida Cc Coach Balks At UI Job

Idaho men’s basketball coach Kermit Davis is searching for an assistant after being turned down by Tallahassee (Fla.) Community College coach Mike Gillespie.

Davis has another candidate he intends to pursue as his top assistant. Davis’ staff includes Sammie Freeman and Jay McMillin.

Two of Gillespie’s players had visited Idaho. One has signed with Florida State and the other with Duquesne. Gillespie said he’ll either stay at Tallahassee or he’s in contention for an assistant’s spot at Florida State.

“Whether I came (to Idaho) or not didn’t matter on if those two kids attended Idaho,” said Gillespie, who cited family reasons for remaining in Florida.

Gillespie’s daughter is a standout basketball player at North Carolina State.

Hunter offered

Former Idaho athletic director Gary Hunter has been offered the Wyoming A.D. job, a source close to the situation said.

Hunter is an executive with the Denver Nuggets and Colorado Avalanche.

Cravens bypassed

Former Idaho coach Joe Cravens has been eliminated from consideration for the head coaching position at Southern Oregon State College in Ashland.

Mark Adams, one of four finalists for the North Idaho College job that went to Hugh Watson, remains a candidate at SOSC.

Sandpoint wrestler to BSU

Sandpoint High wrestler Trevor Walkington has signed a letter of intent to attend Boise State University.

Walkington, wrestling partner the past four years with four-time state champion Brett Lawrence, capped an impressive career with a state title at 135 pounds this year. His career record is 104-18. He had two previous third-place finishes at state and a runner-up finish.

Walkington also considered NIC and Montana State University-Northern in Havre.

Putt worth $25,000

Sandpoint resident Laura Holbert has a shot to win $25,000 on Sunday. To do so, she must sink one 10-foot putt.

Holbert, a 66-year-old homemaker, will attempt the putt as part of the Gillette Putting Challenge during the Greater Greensboro Open at the Forest Oaks Country Club in Greensboro, N.C.

She earned the opportunity by winning a sweepstakes drawing at K mart. Holbert and three others were selected as winners of the promotion sponsored by The Gillette Company.

Fisher to CSI

A-2 Player of the Year Casey Fisher of Kellogg intends to sign a letter of intent with College of Southern Idaho.

The 6-foot-7 Fisher led the Kellogg basketball team to third place at state. He averaged 18.4 points and 11.1 rebounds per game.

Fisher went over the 1,000-point milestone this season and shot 64 percent from the field (192 of 301).
