Mets Cool Off Expos; Franco Saves 300th

John Franco became the first left-hander with 300 saves, and Pete Harnisch held baseball’s top-hitting team to three hits in seven innings as the New York Mets beat the visiting Montreal Expos 3-2 on a foggy Monday night.

Franco got his fifth save of the season and his third in three games. It came exactly 12 years after his first save, with Cincinnati on April 29, 1984.

Lance Johnson drove in two runs and Rey Ordonez went 2 for 3 to extend his hitting streak to 14 games for the Mets.

St. Louis

Tom Glavine won for the first time in five starts and Fred McGriff had two RBIs as Atlanta completed a three-game sweep of St. Louis.

Glavine (2-3) allowed one run and seven hits in 7-2/3 innings and struck out seven.

Padres 2, Astros 0

San Diego

Joey Hamilton threw a four-hitter to become the first five-game winner in the major leagues and Luis Lopez hit his first home run in nearly two years as San Diego beat Houston.

Dodgers 10, Cubs 4

Los Angeles

Raul Mondesi broke out of an 0-for-24 slump with a three-run homer and five RBIs to lead Los Angeles over Chicago.

Clearing the bases Montreal’s Henry Rodriguez was named National League player of the week for April 22-28. Rodriguez, the Expos’ left fielder, batted .363 (12 for 33) with four home runs and 12 RBIs in seven games.
