Women To Present Two Solo Dramas

Two one-woman shows will be staged this week - one about a feminist foremother and the other about a woman who explores her Northwest neighborhood.

Mary Ashton Rice Livermore, suffragist, abolitionist, women’s rights activist, temperance worker and lecturer, will be characterized by Mary Anne Seibert Hamm at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Spokane, 4340 W. Fort George Wright Drive.

The play, “Queen of the Platform - Mary Livermore, 1820-1905,” was developed by a team of Seattle theater artists: Hamm, who wanted to find a way to combine her religion and her work, and playwright Toni Douglass and director Rita Giomi.

On Thursday at the Spokane Community College Lair Student Center, Adriadne Shaffer, a Seattle actress, will stage “Northwest Passages: Share the Heritage,” at 9:30 and 10:30 a.m.

Shaffer portrays a young nurse who interacts with her Chinese, Japanese, Indian and African-American neighbors to discover the diverse stories and experiences that make up her community.

The presentation is a combined effort of the Nordic Heritage Museum and Living Voices, an organization dedicated to bringing Northwest cultures to the classroom.
