Smiley Goes Nine To Notch Shutout

John Smiley threw a four-hitter and Bret Boone and Barry Larkin drove in seven runs between them as the Cincinnati Reds routed the Houston Astros 10-0 Wednesday in Houston.

Smiley (10-9) allowed singles in the second, third, seventh and eighth innings as he pitched his first complete game of the season and first shutout since May 2, 1994. He walked one and struck out struck out seven.

Boone had a run-scoring single in the fifth and a three-run double in the seventh. Two of Larkin’s three RBIs came on his 17th homer in the eighth inning as the Reds won for the eighth time in 10 games.

Expos 6, Rockies 2

Montreal

Jeff Fassero pitched a six-hitter and Moises Alou homered and drove in four runs to lead Montreal to a win and a three-game sweep of Colorado.

Fassero (11-7) struck out four and walked three - one intentionally - to win his third straight start. In pitching his fourth complete game this season, the left-hander handed the Rockies their fourth straight loss and 14th defeat in 17 road games.

Mets 3, Pirates 2 (10)

New York

Chris Jones hit a two-run homer with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning, rallying New York to victory over Pittsburgh.

Jones’ dramatic shot to straightaway center, his fourth homer, off Dan Plesac (3-2) gave the Mets their fifth straight win and third consecutive comeback victory.

Cubs 4, Giants 1

Chicago

Steve Trachsel limited San Francisco to four hits over seven innings as Chicago won its third straight.

The Cubs, who began the day trailing first-place St. Louis by 4-1/2 games in the N.L. Central, have won seven of their last eight.

Braves 7, Padres 4

San Diego

Tom Glavine pitched a strong seven-plus innings and Marquis Grissom had four hits as Atlanta snapped a three-game losing streak with a victory over San Diego.

Dodgers 3, Marlins 0

Los Angeles

Ramon Martinez allowed four hits in seven-plus innings and Eric Karros hit a two-run single in the first inning - after three straight walks by Pat Rapp - as Los Angeles beat Florida.

Philadelphia

The St. Louis game at Philadelphia was rained out with the Phillies leading 2-0 in the third inning. The game will be made up tonight as part of a doubleheader.

Clearing the bases

Right-handed reliever Elmer Dessens of the Pittsburgh Pirates was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained muscle in his left side… . Fassero has not allowed a home run to a left-handed hitter since June 30, 1994 - a span of 375 innings over 57 starts. Barry Bonds was the last left-hander to homer off the Montreal pitcher.
