Ursula Hegi Selected Volunteer Of The Month

Ursula Hegi has been named the Big Brothers and Sisters of Spokane’s July Volunteer of the Month. An author, Hegi is also a writing and literature professor at Eastern Washington University.

The following Washington State University students have been elected to Phi Eta Sigma, national honor society for freshmen: Erica Brandenburg, Cheney; Janeil Stone, Deer Park; Cheryl Rudd, Pullman; and Meagan Elliott-Marsh, Sasha Jordan, Jennifer Moritz, Shannon Mortenson and Andrea Renford, all of Spokane.

The following Washington students received their degrees from Central Washington University: Tim Harris, and Juliet Rose, both of Cheney; Jasen Baril, Colbert; Peter Parviainen, Liberty Lake; Molly Rettkowski, Reardan; Bruce Gray, Deer Lake; Stanton Brown, Rosalia; Jim Hodgen, Tom Cox and Julie Westerman, all of Spokane; Tana Crawford, Colfax; Scott Allen, Kevin Kinnan and Patrick Stewart, all of Colville; Charles Short, Grand Coulee; Laila Daud, Pullman; and Douglas Bullis, Republic.

Jenny Bresnahan, a 1992 graduate of Ferris High School, graduated with honors from Santa Clara University. A member of Phi Beta Kappa, she will participate in the Japan Exchange and Teaching program for one year.

Melissa Keller, Ryan Vold and Desirae Victor, all of Sprague, Wash., have been nominated for a National Caring Award.

The National Caring Awards were established to identify particularly caring Americans and reinforce their activities.

Local winners of the Inland Empire Writing Contest sponsored by the Spokane Branch of American Pen Women were: Patterned verse: Ruby Phillipy and Betty Egbert, first place (tie); Kathryn Epton, second; and Eleanor Whitworth, third. Free verse: Florence Boutwell, first; and Betty Egbert, second and third. Non-fiction: Carol Roberts, first; and Clararose Childs, third place.

Seth Coleman, Spokane, received his bachelor of arts degree from Dartmouth College. He is the son of William and Mary Lynn Coleman.

Several Washington students recently graduated from Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho: Abigail Davis, Clarkston; Adam Wais-Serr, Colville; Rachel Westenskow, Deer Park; Michael Sanders, Greenacres; Dawn MaLaughlin, Otis Orchards; Cean Joseph Smalls and Randolph Scot Schaefer, both of Spokane; and Drew Davenport, Veradale.

Catherine Newstrom has graduated with honors from the University of Washington School of Medicine and was elected into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. A 1992 graduate of the University of Notre Dame, she a member of Phi Beta Kappa and a 1988 graduate of Gonzaga Prep. She is the daughter of Jim and Betty Newstrom, Veradale.

Tara Barrett, Spokane, was a state winner in the seventh annual National High School Recipe Contest held at Johnson and Wales University, Providence, R.I. A senior at Mead High School, she created blueberry muffins and chocolate raspberry cheesecake for the competition. She received a $1,000 renewable scholarship.
