Martinez’s Ribs Far From Healed
Edgar Martinez’s return to the Seattle Mariners is going to take longer than expected.
A bone scan Thursday revealed that the Mariners’ All-Star designated hitter has stress fractures in four of his ribs on the right side.
Martinez, 33, sustained what were believed to be bruised ribs in a collision with catcher John Marzano July 20. He was expected to come off the 15-day disabled list Tuesday.
“These fractures did not appear in the two previous sets of X-rays taken of Edgar,” Dr. Mitch Storey said. Martinez is hitting .334 with a major league-leading 44 doubles, 22 home runs and 82 runs batted in.
