Bomb Kills French Bishop In Algeria
A bomb killed a French bishop as he returned home from a ceremony honoring seven French monks slain by Muslim militants three months ago, authorities said Friday.
Thursday’s blast also killed the chauffeur of Bishop Pierre Claverie. The two men had been driving home to his diocese in Oran, 250 miles west of Algiers.
The bishop was the 19th French member of the clergy killed in the troubled north African country since 1992, when Muslim militants began their violent campaign to overthrow the secular government.
