Plane Lands Safely As Smoke Fills Cabin

Compiled From Wire Services

An American Airlines pilot who made an emergency landing saw the engine oil pressure drop and heard a popping noise before smoke filled the cockpit and cabin, an airline spokesman said.

At 33,000 feet - and about 20 minutes from Harrisburg International Airport - the pilot shut down one of the two engines and steered the McDonnell Douglas Super 80 jetliner to a safe emergency landing Wednesday night, spokesman John Hotard said.

None of the 139 passengers or crew aboard Flight 354 from Chicago to New York were injured, but they were definitely scared.

Many called their families from cellular phones while in flight and one woman said she put her driver’s license in her bra so her body could be identified in the event of a crash.
