Baltimore Ends Streak With Win At Cleveland

Associated Press

American League

Roberto Alomar and Eddie Murray each had three hits Saturday as the Baltimore Orioles snapped a 10-game losing streak in Cleveland with a 9-4 win over the Indians.

The Orioles, routed 11-1 by Cleveland on Friday night, won their first game at Jacobs Field since June 29, 1994.

Manny Ramirez went 4 for 5 with his 25th homer and three singles for the Indians.

Jesse Orosco (3-1), the third of four Orioles pitchers, retired all six batters he faced to earn the win.

Red Sox 6-0, Twins 3-6

Boston

Minnesota’s Scott Aldred pitched seven shutout innings in the nightcap to win in an improbable pitching duel with Boston rookie Jeff Suppan as Minnesota got a split.

Aldred (5-7), released by Detroit on May 28 after going 0-4 with a 9.35 ERA, posted his fifth win in eight decisions since joining the Twins.

Suppan, making his first start of the season and just the fourth of his career, allowed five runs and seven hits in 7-2/3 innings.

Angels 11, Blue Jays 6

Toronto

Mark Langston allowed five hits over eight innings, and Garret Anderson and Chili Davis each had four hits as California halted a five-game losing streak.

Langston (6-4) struck out five and walked two in helping the Angels end a season-high six-game road losing streak.

Davis homered, doubled, and singled twice for the Angels, who won on the road for the first time since a 6-4 victory in Seattle on July 13.

Ed Sprague hit his 29th home run for the Blue Jays, who lost for only the third time in their last nine.

Tony Castillo (3-2) took the loss.

Brewers 7, Athletics 0

Oakland, Calif.

Former Spokane Indian Matt Mieske drove in four runs, and another ex-Indian, Ricky Bones, pitched eight strong innings for his first win since June 25.

Mieske had an RBI double in the fourth and cleared the bases with a triple in the eighth, putting the Brewers up 6-0.

Bones (7-11), who had been demoted to the bullpen, was making his first start since July 15. He allowed four hits in eight innings, striking out six and walking two.

Scott Brosius had two of Oakland’s four hits.

Doug Johns (6-11) was the loser.

White Sox 11, Rangers 9

Arlington, Texas

Ozzie Guillen singled home the go-ahead run in the ninth inning as Chicago beat Texas after wasting a six-run lead.

Texas trailed 8-2 before tying the score with six runs in the seventh.

Royals 11, Yankees 4

Kansas City, Mo.

Johnny Damon and Mike Macfarlane drove in two runs each during Kansas City’s seven-run fourth inning that lifted the Royals past New York.

David Howard had three hits and Jose Offerman, who slid home with the winning run in the 10th inning of Kansas City’s 4-3 win on Friday night, added two hits and scored three runs.

Valentin placed on DL

Boston placed shortstop John Valentin on the 15-day disabled list before Saturday’s doubleheader against Minnesota and recalled Alex Delgado from Pawtucket of the International League.

Valentin, suffering from a left shoulder strain, was hitting .298 with 11 home runs and 46 RBIs this season.

Coming off a career year in 1995 with a .298 average, 27 homers and 102 RBIs, Valentin suffered the injury May 24 in California. He has reaggravated it a few times in the past two months.

Twins make plays

Minnesota had three defensive gems in the nightcap, with second baseman Chuck Knoblauch making an over-the-shoulder grab on Lee Tinsley in the third and Rich Becker coming in for a sliding catch off Mo Vaughn in the fourth. The best, however, was turned in by shortstop Jeff Reboulet, who dove into the first row of the seats down the third-base line to grab a foul ball in the seventh.
