Braves Overcome Dodgers In 18th

Associated Press

National League

Mike Mordecai and Ryan Klesko hit run-scoring singles off surprise reliever Ramon Martinez in the 18th inning Saturday, lifting the Atlanta Braves over the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-3.

In the longest major-league game by innings this season, Los Angeles manager Bill Russell was forced to use Martinez (8-5) when he ran out of relievers in the 15th. Martinez, who pitched seven shutout innings Wednesday against Florida, went four innings in his first relief appearance since Oct. 2, 1988.

Brad Woodall (1-2), Atlanta’s eighth pitcher, worked 2-2/3 innings for the win, ending the 5-hour, 5-minute game.

Rockies 8, Cubs 2

Chicago

Colorado won consecutive road games for the first time since May 27-28, beating Chicago behind homers from Andres Galarraga, Vinny Castilla and Ellis Burks.

In 23 games at Wrigley Field since the Rockies joined the league in 1993, the teams have combined to hit 41 homers and Colorado is 14-9. At Coors Field, the two clubs have combined for 72 homers and the Cubs have the edge 16-9.

Phillies 7, Pirates 6

Philadelphia

Pittsburgh’s Jeff King, switched from first to second base for the ninth inning, misplayed Mike Lieberthal’s grounder with one out and allowed the winning run to score for Philadelphia.

Ricky Bottalico (3-5) had given up a game-tying, two-run homer to pinch-hitter Mark Johnson in the top of the ninth, preventing Phillies starter David West from getting the win in his first appearance this year.

Mets 5, Cardinals 4

New York

Todd Hundley hit his 32nd homer and Butch Huskey added a two-run single as New York beat St. Louis.

Pete Harnisch (7-7) scattered five hits in 6-1/3 innings, struck out seven and walked three. John Franco, the Mets’ third pitcher, recorded four outs for his 23rd save in 28 chances.

Expos 6, Reds 2

Montreal

Shane Andrews pounded Cincinnati pitching again with a homer and four RBIs to lead Montreal to a win.

Andrews, 15 for 31 with six homers and 17 RBIs against the Reds this season, hit a run-scoring single in the second and a three-run homer in the fourth.

The Expos have won seven of their last 10 games.

Astros 4, Giants 1

Houston

Shane Reynolds pitched a three-hitter for his third complete game this season leading Houston past San Francisco and sending the Giants to their seventh straight road loss.

Reynolds (13-6) struck out eight and walked two in the low-hit game of his career.

Marlins 5, Padres 2

San Diego

Kevin Brown allowed three hits in eight innings, and Devon White went over the fence to save a home run after driving home the go-ahead run to lead San Diego past Florida.

Brown (10-9) allowed a leadoff single to Rickey Henderson, then retired 16 consecutive batters before Henderson singled in the sixth. Brown struck out six and walked none.

Smoltz hobbled

Atlanta’s John Smoltz, the winningest pitcher in the majors this season, may miss at least one start because of a chip fracture in his left wrist.

The nine-year veteran sustained the injury on his final pitch in the eighth inning of Friday night’s 2-1 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Philly plans tribute

Philadelphia will Friday honor Jim Bunning, who will be inducted into the Hall of Fame today. It will be the third straight year that a former Phillies player will be inducted: Steve Carlton in 1994, and Mike Schmidt and Richie Ashburn in 1995.
