Dave Quistad Selected As Teacher Of The Year

Dave Quistad, music and band instructor at Colville (Wash.) High School, has been selected as the Teacher of the Year in the seven-county region served by Educational Service District 101.

Quistad was selected for the award open to more than 5,700 elementary and high school teachers in 59 public school districts. He now advances to statewide competition, sponsored by the state superintendent of public instruction.

Colville High’s director of instrumental music since 1987, Quinstad’s numerous honors through the years include Colville High School Teacher of the Year, Masonic/Junior Achievement Teacher of the Year, Colville Community Arts Outstanding Educator, and a candidate for Idaho State Teacher of the Year.

Three Inland Northwest students received bachelor of arts degrees from Seattle Pacific University. Their names, hometowns and majors are: David Graham, Nine Mile Falls, environmental studies; Patricia Green, Spokane, English; and Leasa Milchovich, Spokane, special education.

Charles Parfrey, of Parfrey Trucking, Spokane, has been included in the 1996-97 edition of Who’s Who in Executives and Professionals.

Sarah Ferris, who completed her last year at Opportunity Elementary, has received the Presidential Educational Award from President Clinton for academics. She earned a 4.0 grade point for the past three years.

James Talley, a member of the Spokane Shadle Lions Club, was one of 700 Lions Club members from around the world to be sworn in as district governors during the 79th Lions Clubs International convention in Montreal.

Amy Scribner, daughter of Susan Gamache, Spokane, and Gary Scribner, Cheney, won a $750 Gerson F. Miller Journalism Scholarship for the 1996 fall quarter at Western Washington University. A junior journalism and Spanish major, she has a 3.2 grade-point average and is a writing fellow at WWU. She is also a reporter for the Western Front campus newspaper.

Joel Fahland, son of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Fahland, Deer Park, graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y. He completed the culinary arts program at Spokane Community College.

Fahland is working at Ray’s Boathouse in Seattle.

Alton Jamison, director of Washington State University’s Student Advising and Learning Center, will also become interim director for the university’s Career Services office.

Calen Boutilier, a 1996 graduate of West Valley High School, received a room waiver with his Washington State University Presidential Scholar in Residence Award. He is the son of Bob and Chris Ouellette, Spokane.

Roni Reed, Spokane, and Daniel Kenreck, Medical Lake, are spring graduates of Cornell University, Ithaca, New York. Reed received a doctorate of laws, and Kenreck, bachelor of arts.

R.J. Keetch, a June graduate of Eastern Washington University, is a public relations and communication intern this summer for Beta Theta Pi Fraternity in Oxford, Ohio. At EWU, Keetch was president of the water-ski club, student council assistant, and president of Beta Theta Pi. He is the son of Ralph and Diane Keetch.

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Richard Weatherly, son of Garry Weatherly, Kettle Falls, Wash., recently received the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.

Weatherly was recognized for his outstanding achievement while serving as trouble shooter with Helicopter Combat Support Squadron 8, Naval Air Station, Norfolk, Va.

A 1991 graduate of Kettle Falls High School, he joined the Navy in January 1992.
