Teen Mom Jailed For Ditching Son

Compiled From Wire Services

A South Carolina teenager was jailed Saturday on charges she abandoned her 5-year-old son in a Brooklyn Toys ‘R’ Us store.

Tamekka Adams, 19, was charged in Criminal Court with abandonment and endangering the welfare of a child. She did not enter a plea.

If convicted, she faces up to five years in prison and a $1,000 fine. She was jailed on $25,000 bail.

Adams’ son, Jonathan, has been living with a New York foster family since he was found alone in the toy store in March. Adams said she left the child because she couldn’t get welfare assistance for him and didn’t want it for herself. She said she hoped he would have a better life without her.

Adams, who is unemployed and has an eighth-grade education, agreed to be extradited from South Carolina and was brought to New York early Saturday.
