Council May Decide On Skywalk Tonight

Sacred Heart Medical Center probably will learn tonight whether it can build a skywalk across McClellan Street between Eighth and Ninth avenues.

The Spokane City Council is expected to make a decision on the controversial sky bridge, which would link the hospital’s parking garage to the Southside Medical Center Building.

Hospital officials want the council to overturn the city Plan Commission’s 4-3 vote rejecting the proposal.

In March, a majority of its members said the skywalk would block the views of South Hill residents and people driving north on Grand Avenue.

But the hospital argues the pedestrian walkway would increase the safety of patients and doctors shuttling between the two buildings.

A briefing for the council will start at 3:30 p.m. in the lower-level conference room of City Hall, 808 W. Spokane Falls Blvd. The council meeting will begin at 6 p.m. , DataTimes MEMO: This sidebar appeared with the story: MEETING The council will meet tonight at 6 in City Hall.
